FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys have had a lot going on at tight end lately after the news of Dalton Schultz opting out of the remainder of OTA’s because of the frustrations over his franchise tag deal.
The Cowboys did make some progress in the position after officially signing TE Jake Ferguson to his four-year rookie deal. Ferguson was Dallas’s fourth-round pick out of Wisconsin.
Ferguson is the last and final of the nine draft picks to sign his rookie contract. All of the new draft picks are now officially under contract which is a great place to start before minicamp takes off next week.
With the tight end position getting extra attention this week after Schultz announced not returning for this week’s voluntary OTA workouts it’s good to see progress at the position.
Quarterback Dak Prescott told us Tuesday night at the Cowboys Home Run Derby that he is not worried about the current situation and says that they will get it handled.
Like many players, Prescott was also put under the franchise tag himself in 2020.
The veteran TE Schultz is frustrated over the franchise tag that was placed on him in March. The frustration comes from not being any closer to a long-term deal before the July 15 deadline. The contract currently stands at $10.9 million for the 2022 year and if the front office doesn’t make a decision by July 15 he will be franchised tagged for the year and he will become a free agent at the end of the season.
Due to the fact that OTA’s are a voluntary workout Schultz cannot be fined or punished for not being in participation.
With that, if Schultz decides to miss minicamp that will take place next week he will be fined for each day that he misses.
With Schultz out for this week OTA’s Ferguson will be taking first-team reps with Prescott. Ferguson will be working out with the other tight ends Sean McKeon, Jeremy Sprinkle, Ian Bunting, and Peyton Hendershot.
