DALLAS, TX – The Dallas Mavericks have acquired center/power forward Christian Wood from the Houston Rockets for the No. 26 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft as well as sending four Dallas’s players, Boban Marjanovic, Trey Burke, Sterling Brown and Marquese Chriss to Houston.
Towards the end of the season and into the playoffs it became more and more obvious that Dallas really lacked a presence in the paint. On more than one occasion they got out-rebounded badly and most games that they were outrebounded in the playoffs they lost. The lack of presence under the basket became more and more clear the farther the Mavs went in the playoffs.
Dwight Powell is their current center and he is a strong player for the Mavs. He played all 82 games last season and stayed healthy the entire year. With that being said, Powell struggled in the postseason against the Suns and the Warriors. He was outplayed and contributed very little down low for Dallas.
The Mavs made it to the Western Conference Finals where they lost to the Golden State Warriors 4-1 in the series. One of the offseason moves Dallas needed to do in order to better their chances next season is to get a stronger, more aggressive center.
Nico Harrison thinks Christian Wood is that answer. With this move it gives Dallas a productive big man as well as more flexibility with their roster due to the fact that they gave up four players and gained one.
Wood averaged 19.1 points per game and 9.9 rebounds in his two seasons for the Houston Rockets.
