Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Day One Takeaways

OXNARD, CA – The Dallas Cowboys officially reported to Oxnard, California on Monday to get ready for the official start of practice on Tuesday morning.

The Cowboy’s practice consisted of one hour and 23 minutes with no pads. There will be no pads for the first four days of practice. They will get Sunday off and will resume on Monday, August 1 with pads.

Dallas made a couple roster moves this morning before practice got underway. They placed WR Michael Gallup on PUP (physically unable to perform list) (knee). They also placed WR Dontario Drummond, CB Quandre Mosley and LB Aaron Hansford on PUP.

Dallas also Placed LB Damone Clark on Active/NFI.

The Cowboy’s also made LB Jabril Cox and WR James Washington active. Cox is coming back from a torn ACL during his rookie season last year. Washington was in a boot most of the off-season workouts.

Here’s a breakdown of some players that had a standout practice during day 1:

CB Anthony Brown – Anthony Brown had a pick-six for the play of the day after snagging a pass from Dak Prescott that was intended for rookie WR Jalen Tolbert and returned it for a pick-six play. This was the first interception of training camp and Brown looks extremely confident on the field.

LG Tyler Smith – Tyler Smith is still alternating with left guard Connor McGovern. This is no different than what we have seen in the off-season and OTA’s. McGovern started the day with first-team while Smith started with first-team during the 2-minute drills. Everyone noticed Smith’s leaner appearance, he has been getting to work during the off season and has really trimmed up.

WR Jalen Tolbert – Jalen Tolbert has a lot of pressure on him as everyone is anticipating Tolbert to see early minutes week one due to Michael Gallup still being on the PUP list. Head Coach Mike McCarthy said that Gallup is in the fourth quarter of his recovery. Tolbert had a great day at practice and had a lot of connections from quarterback Dak Prescott. Tolbert received the offensive play of the day when he caught a catch from Prescott on the right sideline.

Stephen Jones did an interview with 105.3thefan and was asked about Jalen Tolbert’s importance in being able to be reliable for this team come week 1:

“He’s already shown us a lot. He spent a ton of time with Dak [Prescott], not only on the field in our team activities, but working out with Dak. He’s really shown a lot and he’s going to get pushed a lot here early and often. But so far he’s absorbed everything and he’s shown everything that we expected to see in him when we drafted.”

LB Micah Parsons – Micah Parsons had a tremendous season last year after receiving defensive player of the year as a first year rookie. Parsons came to practice today with nothing shy of that energy. He took reps at middle linebacker as well as left and right end. Parsons play of the day was when he flew by Tyrone Smith to sack quarterback Dak Prescott, not once but twice.

Tony Pollard – Tony Pollard was seen today taking reps at slot receiver alongside Zeke Elliott as seen all off-season, minicamp, and OTA’s. With the depth chart low with wide receivers due to injury, Pollard has been looked at to take some reps at slot. Pollard played with first-team slot receiver during 11-on-11.

Pollard was asked after practice in an interview with the ticket what he gets more excited for when in a huddle : called for a run or a pass?

“I’m going to say a run because that comes natural to me because I’ve been playing running back since little league. So, I feel like everything at running to me is second nature. I’ve been kind of been a receiver a long time in my career, too, but that was like my secondary position. Naturally I’m just better at running back if you ask me.” Pollard said.

Practice will resume tomorrow morning.
