More Roster Moves for the Cowboys: Dallas Waive Kicker Lirim Hajrullahu

FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys made more roster moves today as they had to cut their roster down to 80 by 3 PM today. The biggest surprise of them all was the decision to waive kicker Lirim Hajrullahu after he won the kicker competition against the rookie out of Texas Tech Jonathon Garibay.

Dallas still didn’t feel completely comfortable with the lack of depth at that position. Towards the tail end of training camp the Cowboys brought in Brett Maher, the former Cowboys kicker from 2018-2019.

The Cowboys decided Monday afternoon that they were more comfortable with Maher at the position and waived kicker Lirim Hajrullahu.

“We trust Brett’s numbers. This cut is tough and we felt Brett was in front and we decided to give him the opportunity.” Head Coach Mike McCarthy stated in Tuesday night’s presser. McCarthy told us that they are going with Maher because of his leg strength and the confidence that Maher has been kicking with lately.

Dallas also placed TE Jeremy Sprinkle on injured reserve due to an achilles. LB Christian Sam was waived-injured. WR Jaquarii Roberson and CB Quandre Mosely were waived.

During all of these changes the Cowboys could’ve put Michael Gallup on PUP which would mean that Gallup is unable to play in the first four games of the season. McCarthy said that he is confident in his recovery process and they are hopeful for a quicker return. Dallas has this option for one more week.

The Cowboys are back in Dallas doing two practices before their third and final preseason game against Seattle on Friday night at 7 PM in AT&T Stadium.

McCarthy told us before Tuesday night practice that the first string players will be receiving a lot of reps and if all goes well the first string will not be playing in the last preseason game on Friday. Head Coach said they will be padded practices for these two days and they will work the one’s as much as possible.

With the first string players most likely not playing in Friday’s preseason game McCarthy said that he would like too Will Grier in the game as much as possible and he plans on giving Grier a chuck of playing time on Friday.

McCarthy also told us that due to Kavontae Turpin’s stellar performance in last Saturday’s preseason game he will be get more opportunities at the receiver rotation this week.
