Dak Prescott Undergoes Surgery on Thumb on Monday, Cowboys Without QB1 For 6-8 Weeks

FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys lost their QB1 Dak Prescott on Sunday night in the fourth quarter against Tampa Bay after he hit his thumb on another player’s hand. The injury didn’t look too severe at first but Prescott did leave the game and got it checked out.

Following the game Jerry Jones told reporters that Prescott will need surgery on his right thumb and he will be out several weeks. Hours later sources confirmed that Prescott had surgery on his hand on Monday by Dr. Thomas Diliberti at the Texas Hand & Arm Center. The Cowboys are still not 100 percent sure if how long he is expected to be out, predictions are saying 6-8 weeks. The earliest Prescott could return is October 30 against the Chicago Bears in week 8.

Dallas will continue on with their second string QB Cooper Rush. Cowboys VP Stephen Jones on 1053thefan on the moving on with Rush, “Certainly we’ll be evaluating all options. Cooper (Rush) stepped in and did a great job for us last year when Dak had to sit out a game. He knows the system. Will Grier knows the system.”

The Cowboys will be adding a third and healthy QB to their roster outside of QB2 Cooper Rush and QB3 Will Grier. Head coach Mike McCarthy said it’s just a matter of who and they are working through it. McCarthy said they are having a number of conversations right now.

Right guard Connor McGovern also left the game early in the first quarter with an ankle injury. He did not reenter the game. That leaves Dallas without their starting right guard and with Tyler Smith at left tackle Matt Farniok.

It was announced Monday morning that McGovern has a high right ankle sprain and he will be out 2-4 weeks.

Another Cowboy that left the game early is safety Jayron Kearse. He left midway through the game with a knee injury. It was confirmed on Monday he has a MCL Sprain and he will be missing 2-4 weeks as well.
