SMU Fights To Keep Iron Skillet Against TCU

DALLAS, Texas – On Saturday, Sept. 23rd, SMU will face off at home against what many would call their biggest rival, TCU.

Saturday will mark the last day of “Iron Skillet Week,” as both teams like to call the week leading up to their once a year game. Despite no longer being in the same conference, both schools have agreed to play each other up until 2025.

But what made this year different and caused the complete sell out of Gerald J. Ford Stadium for the upcoming game? It would be none other than the return of SMU Head Coach Sonny Dykes. Dykes was the head coach of the Mustangs from 2017-2021 until crossing over to the other side of town and taking the head coach position for the TCU Horned Frogs.

Dykes is not only returning to his old stomping grounds, he’s marching back in leading the arch nemesis of SMU, TCU. In speaking with reporters earlier this week, Dykes said, “If I bought a ticket to the game, I would boo me, too.”

TCU is currently 2-0, coming off a bye week. SMU stands at 2-1 after a difficult loss to Maryland last week. It will be important for the Mustangs to take care of the ball this game, as they now have one of the worst turnover margins in the country. Scott Symon’s defense will also need to make big tackles in order to stop some talented playmakers on the TCU offense.

The game is set to kickoff tomorrow, 11 AM at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. No matter the outcome, this game will go down in SMU history.
