Cowboys Free Agency Update: Sign Former Colts Cornerback Stephon Gilmore

FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys had made some big moves during the start of free agency but signing Stephon Gilmore was probably the biggest. As of now, Gilmore has one year left on his contract, $7.9 million base, with a roster bonus of $1 million due on May 20.

Cowboys moves so far in free-agency:

Franchise tag: RB Tony Pollard
Re-signed S Donovan Wilson
Traded for CB Stephon Gilmore
Re-signed LB Leighton Vander Esch

G Connor McGovern to the Bills
WR Noah Brown to the Texans
LB Luke Gifford to the Titans

A big issue last season was a hole on the opposite side of the field that cornerback Trevon Diggs was not on and teams forcing the ball to the other side to avoid the tough coverage that Diggs brings. With both Diggs and Gilmore in the backfield they are going to be a menace. Between the two of them they have 46 career interceptions.

The Cowboys also re-signed Safety Donovan Wilson for a three year $24 million dollar deal with 13.5 million guaranteed. The Cowboys backfield looked incredible last season and they continue to get better in the beginning of this free agency.

“It means a lot. We talked about brotherhood and about hard work, and I’m just looking forward to the future.” Donovan told Cowboys reporter Hailey Sutton.

Wilson went from a sixth round pick and has worked his way to a $24 million dollar contract with the Cowboys.

Early Wednesday morning the Cowboys also re-signed LB Leighton Vander Esch to a two-year deal for $11 million. Bringing back Vander Esch and Wilson keeps stability in the Cowboys’ back seven, and the trade for Gilmore boosts the secondary, albeit with a 32-year-old.

Vander Esch told CowboysSI.com on Tuesday that the coaching staff is the main reason he wanted to return to Dallas.
“I’m so happy to be coming back to Dallas,” Vander Esch said. “One of the big reasons is I just love playing for Dan and Mike.”
