FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys announced late Wednesday afternoon that they have cut RB Ezekiel Elliott and he is free to sign with a new team. Elliott was set to cost the Cowboys $16.7 million this year for the Cowboys, with him being out of the picture that opens up a lot of cap space for Dallas to work with.
Tony Pollard is already locked in for the 2023 season. He has been franchised tagged with the Cowboys for next season. He will receive $10.1 million for the year. With Elliott out Dallas will be saving $5 million if cut now and $11 million is designated as a post-June 1 release.
Elliott expressed after the season that he would be willing to take a pay cut in order to stay with the organization. After Jones and Elliott had a meeting regarding a new contract Elliott declined the arrangement that Dallas had come up with.
The last two years Elliott dealt with a Grade two tear of the PCL in his right knee and a hyperextended knee that required him to wear a brace. Jerry Jones said from the combine that Elliott was more hurt than he let on in 2022.
Elliott had 10,498 all-purpose yards and led the league in rushing twice (2016 and 2018).
He ranks third in franchise history in rushing yards and rushing TDs, behind Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett.
The seven year Elliott era in Dallas is over and he feels he can be in a better role or bigger deal somewhere else.
Elliotts stats while being in Dallas:
– 103 games played
– 1,881 rushing attempts
– 8,262 rushing yards
– 4.4 career YPC
– 68 career rushing TDs
– 30 games with 100 or more rushing yards
– 3 division titles
– 4 playoff appearances
