FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys drafted TE Luke Schoonmaker from the University of Michigan in the second round pick 58 of the 2023 NFL Draft. Dallas adds help at the TE position with this pick after losing Dalton Schultz to Houston in free agency. It was clear this draft class was TE heavy and the Cowboys wanted a piece of the pie.
Schoonmaker is 6’6 260 lbs and played four years at the UofM. Schoonmaker appeared in 32 games with 10 starts at TE. He played TE in 27 games for the university where he made 19 receptions for 219 yards averaging 11.5 yards. Schoonmaker also scored four touchdowns in his college career.
Schoonmaker is a versatile player that is capable of performing a variety of tasks in one, two, and three TE sets. He can also be a run blocker and does a nice job competing in the entry and sustain phases of the block. He shows great footwork and is extremely athletic.
Schoonmaker said on 1053thefan said he had a formal interview with the Cowboys at the combine. “The Cowboys love Big Ten tight ends. I’m through the roof.”
We asked Schoonmaker how it felt to become a Cowboy and he said, “You know, something was in my stomach telling me. It felt like I froze in time and I was just in that moment. To receive that call, it’s just the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me, and I’m just so blessed.”
“You know I always knew about Jason Witten and I always knew that he played so consistent at a high level. I grew up as a Pats fan so I was a big Gronk guy but I knew Jason Witten was one of the greats right up there. Absolutely.” Schoonmaker said.
