OXNARD, CA- Zack Martin has been upset about his contract for quite some time. He has expressed that he is not happy with his contract and wanted a restructure but the front office has not done anything at this point. Well, they might have a problem on their hands now because Martin did not show up to training camp on Tuesday morning and it seems like he is officially holding out.
The Cowboys All- Pro right guard landed a six-year deal in June 2018 worth a maximum of $84 million. He currently carries an $11 million cap figure into this season and a $24.3 million cap figure into 2024. His contract can be voided after the 2024 season.
Martin is arguably the NFL’s best offensive lineman and he is being paid about $7 million less in 2023 than other top guards in the league. In recent ESPN Polls, Martin was named the best interior offensive lineman in the NFL. He was also given a 99 rating by Madden, the first guard to receive a 99 since Larry Allen in 2003.
Martin has two years left on his deal and is set to make $13.5 million this year and $13 million next year. Atlanta’s Chris Lindstrom and Indianapolis’ Quenton Nelson have the highest annual average salaries for guards at $20.5 million and $20 million Respectively.
When asked about his contract and the status of him Jerry Jones said he had no comment on the matter and he didn’t want to discuss player contracts while at training camp.
“We’ve got everything, as we start camp today where we are, there [is] nothing to concern me about anything to do with what we’re doing with contractual situations.” Jones said.
The official start of practice is tomorrow, Wednesday the 26th, if Martin doesn’t show he could receive up to a $50,000 fine for each day he misses because he is technically still under contract with the Cowboys.
