Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Report

OXNARD, CA- The Dallas Cowboys have just finished up their second day of practice and it is looking very exciting for both sides of the ball. The offense looked stellar doing and the defense got some takeaways from Dak Prescott. Here is a breakdown of what has happened so far and some key plays made by some new faces on this team.

Defense:

The defense has shown that they are an amazing defense and they are hard to compete with in the league. They made that known last year and they still look phenomenal. With the addition of Stephon Gilmore and the Cowboy’s first round pick Mazi Smith they look even better.

QB Dak Prescott spoke on the defense after practice today and said, “Just in these two days, I’ve felt it. They’re good. They communicate well and I think that’s where it starts. They know each other, they know the call, they feel confident with the call they’re getting from DQ. They feel confident with the man next to them doing their job and that allows them to play fast. That’s gonna make it tough on any offense. For us to get to go against them every day, that’s iron sharpening iron. They’re impressive.”

Micah Parsons had a great day as well, he recorded one sack on Dak Prescott today and looked strong and fast, per usual.

Nahshon Wright had an interception today for the defense. He had coverage on WR Jalen Tolbert and snagged the interception thrown by QB Dak Prescott at the 20 yard line.

The DB’s looked solid today, Stephon Gilmore was present at practice but Trevon Diggs was not. Head Coach Mike McCarthy said there was nothing wrong with Diggs and there is no concerns.

Gilmore spoke with the media after practice about playing with Trevon Diggs, “It’s gonna be fun. They gotta throw it somewhere. So you know one of us is going to get tested. We just gotta be ready for wherever they throw it. Looking forward to it.”

The first round pick Mazi Smith had a great first few days of camp. Defensive line depth took a clear win over the offensive line depth in a rep where Smith finished the play taking out QB Cooper Rush which could’ve been a Rush escape.

Offense:
The offense has been looking great and one that everyone seems to be talking about it Deuce Vaughn. Vaughn was the sixth round pick for the Cowboy’s in the 2023 draft. His story went viral when his dad, a Cowboys scout, got to make the call to his son about becoming a Cowboy, has shown tremendous speed and ability to run the ball early in this camp.

Vaughn is 5’5 and because he is so small it makes it easier for him to squeeze through the defense.

Another rookie that we saw do very well in his first two days of camp is WR Jalen Tolbert. Tolbert had a rough first season and he was very open about his rookie struggles. He didn’t see as much playing time as everyone thought he would get and barely saw the field in his rookie season.

He is showing improvement in his first two days of camp in his route running ability and his strength and toughness going up against these hard DB’s. Tolbert also made multiple contested grabs in team drills.
