HOUSTON, TEXAS — TCU hit the road Saturday night in their first Big 12 conference game of the year. After a tough loss to Colorado, this was a statement game for the Horned Frogs, and that is exactly what they did with a 36-13 victory.
Quarterback Chandler Morris threw for 314 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way for this talented offense. He completed 24 of 37 passes and added 53 yards on 12 carries.
In a press conference last weekend, head coach Sonny Dykes stated that the offense needed to have more energy if they were going to win games. He felt that the team did not act as hyped up as they did last year, and that could be why they started out so slowly. In this game, that wasn’t the issue, as the TCU offense set the tone early with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Morris to Warren Thompson to get this squad fired up.
Houston was known for having quarterback Donovan Smith throw the ball for big gains, but not in this game. The only touchdown the Cougars scored came off a 98-yard kickoff return. Obviously, kickoff returns are not ideal either, but the issue for this TCU defense so far this season has been their secondary, so to see them have success against a stellar pocket passer is good news.
TCU will be back home in Amon G. Carter Stadium this Saturday when they take on SMU in the battle for the Iron Skillet.
