JaKobe Coles Leads TCU In Win Over University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley

FORT, WORTH, TEXAS — The TCU Horned Frogs managed to take the win tonight against the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley at Schollmaier arena with a final score of 88-55 led by Jakobe Coles with 16 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Followed by Jameer Nelson Jr. and Avery Anderson who each contributed 15 points.

JaKobe Coles has led the team in points for his second-straight game. Coles said he is getting comfortable taking deep shots and working back at the four

“I like taking shots that I’m comfortable with and they’re going in.” said Coles. “Everybody on the team can score and it shows the versatility we have on the roster.”

With a slow start in the first half from both teams lacking strong offense and TCU managing to collect 12 total turnovers and 6 of them accumulated in the first nine minutes of the game with 10 total fouls.

The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley had 10 turnovers in the first half with 8 fouls, 3 coming from UTRGV guard Elijah Elliott putting himself in foul trouble early on in the game.

The Horned Frogs came into the 2nd half ready to change the dynamic of this game and take charge.

Head coach Jamie Dixon said the message during halftime was to play a better second half.

“I told them were going to play a great second half and I thought we did better,” said Dixon. “Sixteen assists compared to the eight in the first half was telling to me.”

By cutting their numbers in half on turnovers and finding better offense they managed to take a strong lead against the Vaqueros.

Avery Anderson and Essam Mostafa did however get into some foul trouble with 4 fouls in this half. Dixon said TCU is continuing to develop their defense.

“TCU has an opportunity to be a great defensive team, they’re just not there yet.”

Nelson Jr. said their emphasis continues to be on the defensive side of the ball.

“Coach Is preaching defense, we just have to keep that in our minds,” said Nelson Jr. “I think it’s just consistency. We’ve been having slow starts but it’s okay were going to figure it out.”

The Horned Frogs are now 3-0 and have four days to prepare to take on the 0-3 Mississippi Valley on Friday November 17th. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
