TCU Defeats No. 2 Houston With Millers Game Winning Shot

The Horned Frogs managed to obtain another Big12 win tonight in a close game against the Houston Cougars in the Schollmaier Arena with a final score of 68-67. The team was led by Emanuel Miller with 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists.

The Horned Frogs started this game out weak allowing Houston’s defense to take over.

The Frogs were able to come back from being down 12 points by playing more aggressive on the offense side which led to Houston obtaining 15 fouls as well as a technical foul in the 1st half.

The Horned Frogs capitalized on the opportunity to catch up and had an overall 55.2 percent free throw percentage.

Frogs did however open the second half with a 7-2 run and managed to take the lead. Head coach Jamie Dixon said, “After 8 minutes into the 1st half they had forced turnovers and bad shots,” said Dixon. “But at halftime we were able to refocus them to go into the 2nd half”.

Coming out to the second half you could see that communication on the court had become stronger. For the first time throughout the game the Cougars were forced to let TCU in the paint and shoot from the inside.

Houston Cougar Head Coach Kelvin Sampson says, “We didn’t play as good of defense as I would’ve liked, but TCU is a great offensive team.”

The Cougars didn’t allow TCU to takeover for too long when they had an 8-0 run putting them in a 3-point lead with 4 minutes left in the game.

With less than 10 seconds on the clock TCU’s Miller puts up two points with an assist from Avery Anderson making the score 68-67. The Cougars getting the ball with seconds to score they turn the ball over giving TCU the win.

Sampson says. “We know to give the ball to Jamal Shead in a situation like that on the last possession, and it’s always worked out well for us. I never expected us to not put the ball in Jamal’s hands and we made a mistake there.

TCU is now 2-1 in the Big 12 and will hit the road again to go up against Cincinnati on Tuesday January 16th at 6 p.m. at Fifth Third Arena and can be streamed on ESPN+.
