DALLAS, TEXAS — The last time FC Dallas played in the Cotton Bowl, Inter Miami CF did not exist.
Tonight was Dallas’ return to a place it once called home; a homecoming nearly 15 years later.
The scoreline tonight was the same as it was back on Sept. 30, 2009: 1-0.
What’s different? The opponent.
Back then, it was the New England Revolution. Monday night, Miami—a rematch of last August’s knockout stage of the Leagues Cup.
It took just three minutes for Dallas’ Jesús Ferreira to score the game’s first and only goal.
Paul Arriola slotted it through Miami’s back line, finding Ferreira on the other side who buried it bottom left corner past Drake Callender outstretched hands.
Minutes later, Maarten Paes got a paw to Lionel Messi’s shot going bottom right after the world’s No. 10 was left open at the top of the 18-yard box.
There were limited opportunities for Dallas afterwards with Miami maintaining pressure the remainder of the first half, but Dallas tucked in and sat back to maintain its one goal lead until the final whistle.
