Cowboys Release WR Michael Gallup

FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys release WR Michael Gallup after six years with the organization. Gallup was drafted to the Cowboys in the third round in 2018 and was a starter for the franchise for their last six seasons.

In Gallup’s first season in Dallas he was targeted 68 times, he had 33 receptions for 507 yards and two touchdowns. His 2019 season was the best season he had, he was targeted 113 times and had 66 receptions for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns. In 2020 his targets started to drop after the Cowboys drafted WR CeeDee Lamb and started going through Lamb for the majority of their offense.

In 2020 he finished with 843 total yards and five touchdowns. In 2021 Gallup suffered a torn ACL in the last game of the regular season. He spent the entire offseason and the first seven weeks of the 2022 season recovering. He did not return to play until midway through the 2022 season where he was still trying to get comfortable back on the field on that knee.

In 2023 it was obvious that the Cowboys offense was almost entirely going through Lamb. Gallup was still a starter but wasn’t getting the targets he was used to. Midway through the season the year two WR Jalen Tolbert started to take half of Gallup’s reps.

Towards the end of the 2023 season it was looking like Gallup and the Cowboys were going to part ways at the end of the season. Jerry Jones and Co. were looking for a trade option for Gallup but couldn’t seem to find anyone that would pick up the current contract that Gallup is on. Gallup signed a five-year $62 million deal with the franchise in March of last year with $27 million guaranteed. He has $30 million left on the contract. The Cowboys ended up releasing Gallup on Saturday afternoon. With the release that means Gallup becomes a free-agent and is free to go wherever he desires.

Gallup finished his six year Cowboys career with 266 receptions for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns.
