FRISCO, TX – After 13 seasons the Dallas Cowboys are parting ways with Tyron Smith. The Cowboys tackle decided to join the green gang on Monday, the Jets structured a great deal for the former Cowboy that includes one-year $12.25 million with $6.5 million guaranteed. $2 Million will be Smith’s base salary with $4.5 million coming as a signing bonus.
Smith will serve as part of the offensive line that will be charged with protecting quarterback Aaron Rodgers in his return from a torn Achilles. Smith played against Rodgers when both players were in the NFC and said the quarterback is “extremely intelligent and I know we’re always going to be on the same page” once they get on the field together.
Over the course of the last three seasons Smith has been battling injuries that have stopped him from starting and playing in games for the Cowboys.
Smith was an eight-time Pro Bowler and two-time First Team All-Pro and has been with the Cowboys since he was drafted in the first round in the 2011 draft. On Monday after signing with the Jets, he expressed gratitude to Cowboys nation on his Instagram.
“Thirteen years sure is a long time to sum up in one short letter to thousands of people who have made my time in Dallas so memorable. It’s been a long and wild ride filled with plenty of ups and downs but Cowboy Nation, you have been there through it all,” wrote Smith in part of his address.
The 33-year-old played in 161 games over the course of 13 years for Dallas including seven consecutive Pro Bowls from 2013-2019.
