FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys kicked off OTA’s this week at the Star in Frisco. The Cowboys will have three days of OTA’s this week and three days next week before mandatory minicamp kicks off the first week of June. This is the first time that the rookies that just got drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft get to suit up and take the field with all their veteran teammates.
There were many things to take away from today’s OTA, but one that stood out was at the wide receiver position. With Michael Gallup off to the Las Vegas Raiders the hunt for wide receiver three has begun. Gallup was with the Cowboys for the last six years so this is the first time in six seasons that the Cowboys are going to be without Gallup.
Next man up.
Third year receiver Jalen Tolbert had a great day at OTA’s. He noticeably looks bigger, he has been in the weightroom this off season. His confidence has clearly continued to go up since he was drafted in 2022. WR2 Brandin Cooks spoke on it after OTA’s on Wednesday afternoon. He said, “he’s ready to go.” Cooks said he’s a firm believer that how hard you work the better you will become and he has put in the work and it shows.
Kavontae Turpin and Jalen Brooks were also taking first team reps on Wednesday and looked extremely confident with their QB Dak Prescott. Turpin had multiple long ball catches from Prescott and his route running looked immaculate. He was getting a lot more reps at receiver that we have seen in the past.
Things to note, LB Micah Parsons and WR CeeDee Lamb were not in attendance for OTA’s this week due to contract issues. Head Coach Mike McCarthy spoke on Parsons Wednesday morning and said he has been in the building and was at the facility on Friday. He said he expects Parsons to be at OTA’s next week as well as both Parsons and Lamb to be at mandatory minicamp the first week of june.
There were multiple players that were sidelined today that took mental reps due to recovering from injury. The list includes DT Osa Odighizuwa (undisclosed), NT Mazi Smith (shoulder), TE Luke Schoonmaker (hamstring), LB DeMarvion Overshown (ACL), TE John Stephens Jr. (ACL) and WR David Durden (ACL).
Mike McCarthy also stated during the press conference before practice that Trevon Diggs is looking great, and is hitting the four-day-a-week program. He’s working primarily with Britt Brown, the athletic trainer here at the star. He was not in attendance on Wednesday either.
OTA’s continue next week.
