SMU Runs Through Houston Christian

DALLAS, TEXAS — In the first week of the college football season, SMU emerged victorious with a resounding 59-7 win over Houston Christian University. Notably, running back Brashard Smith dazzled with nine carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Kevin Jennings showcased his skills with 148 passing yards and one touchdown. With this triumph, the Mustangs hold a perfect 2-0 record for the season.

Head coach Rhett Lashley highlighted the team’s quarterback rotation strategy, emphasizing the success of alternating between Preston Stone and Kevin Jennings during the game.

The defensive prowess of SMU was equally impressive. The team secured three crucial takeaways, including interceptions by Ahmaad Moses and Kori Roberson Jr., and a strip sack forced by Jahfari Harvey, which was recovered by Tank Booker and returned for a touchdown. Tank Booker emphasized the importance of these defensive plays in giving their dynamic offense the opportunity to shine.

Looking ahead, SMU is set to face BYU at home on September 6, with kickoff slated for 6 PM C/T.
