FRISCO, TEXAS — Anything but a win from here on out means that FC Dallas will miss the playoffs this season.
A trip to the west coast starts with a game against the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday, who are already eliminated from the playoffs and have the worst record in MLS with 18 points and a 5-23-3 record; then a date with the Portland Timbers (12-10-9) on Sunday, who sit one spot above Dallas in the Western Conference standings.
FCD opened up the season hosting the Earthquakes back in February—a thrilling 2-1 win where Dallas scored late to give them three points to start the season strong. But, FCD has only won once at SJ, and that was back in 2016.
The Quakes were just shut out by CF Montréal, 3-0, while FCD is also coming off a loss: 3-1 at Orlando City SC.
Dallas must win the final three games of the season to even stay in the playoff conversation. FCD will be out with a draw or a loss against SJ, or if Minnesota United FC wins at Real Salt Lake and Portland, who FCD plays in just a few days, wins over Austin FC.
The last time FCD beat the Timbers on the road in the regular season was also during the 2016 season.
Wednesday’s kickoff at Paypal Park is at 9:30 p.m. CT; Sunday’s kickoff at Providence Park is at 6:15 p.m. CT.
