MEMPHIS, TENN — UNT’s 52-44 loss to Memphis extended their historical struggles against the Tigers, moving to 4-19 in the all-time series. Despite the defeat, UNT showcased an explosive offense with 653 yards, the most under head coach Eric Morris.
Junior QB Chandler Morris had a standout game, throwing for a season-high 445 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 71 yards and a score. It marked his fourth straight 300-yard passing game, tying a program record. DT Sheffield shined with 122 receiving yards, two touchdown catches, and an 82-yard rushing score, becoming the first UNT player since 2021 to post back-to-back 100-yard receiving games.
For the first time in program history, UNT started four true freshmen on offense, including TE Brandon Young Jr. and OL Tyler Mercer. UNT also led FBS with 20 different players recording a catch this season.
Despite the offensive success, UNT’s defense struggled, allowing a touchdown on Memphis’ opening drive for the 13th time in 14 games. Special teams were a bright spot, with K Kali Nguma going 5-for-5 on extra points and hitting a 34-yard field goal.
Up next, UNT faces Tulane next Saturday as they look to bounce back and address their defensive issues.
