DURHAM, NC — In a heart-pounding finish, the SMU Mustangs defeated the Duke Blue Devils 28-27 in a game that showcased resilience, strong defense, and clutch performances. The victory not only marked SMU’s first overtime game since October 16, 2020, but also extended the team’s remarkable streaks in conference play and road wins.
A Game of Defense and Grit
The final play of regulation epitomized the Mustangs’ tenacity. Jahfari Harvey rose to the occasion, blocking a 30-yard field goal attempt by Duke as time expired, keeping the game tied at 21-21. This moment was crucial, especially considering SMU’s struggles with turnovers; the Mustangs had a turnover differential of -6, yet managed to prevail against all odds. Remarkably, FBS teams had previously been 1-124 in similar situations this century, with the lone exception being Marshall’s win over Memphis in 2011.
Overcoming Adversity
SMU’s win was not without its challenges. Despite committing six turnovers, the Mustangs’ defense rose to the occasion, allowing zero points off those turnovers. This speaks volumes about the team’s character and defensive capability. The Mustangs outgained Duke, recording 469 total yards compared to Duke’s 393, and dominated in rushing yards, amassing 211 while holding Duke to just 98.
Brashard Smith was a standout, contributing significantly with a 24-yard touchdown run in overtime, showcasing his speed and agility. Smith finished the game with 117 rushing yards and two touchdowns, further solidifying his status on the Jet Award Watch List.
Breaking Records and Setting Standards
This victory extended SMU’s remarkable conference win streak to 13, breaking the previous record of 11 set between 1981 and 1982. The Mustangs have now also won nine consecutive road games, the second-longest streak in program history, and tied for the longest active streak in the FBS alongside Texas.
Roderick Daniels Jr. had a breakout performance, racking up a career-high 153 receiving yards on just two receptions, including an impressive 81-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Kevin Jennings, marking the 15th-longest pass play in program history.
SMU’s Continued Dominance
Under head coach Rhett Lashlee, SMU is now 7-1 for the season, equaling their best start since 2021. Lashlee has led the Mustangs to a commendable 25-10 overall record and an astonishing 17-3 in conference games, making him the most successful coach in the program’s history for the first 20 league games.
The Mustangs have demonstrated their ability to maintain a strong offensive front, leading at halftime in seven straight games, outscoring opponents 185-88 in the first half this season. Their 17-play, 85-yard drive to take a 14-7 lead in the second quarter was the longest of the season, highlighting their capacity to sustain drives and control the tempo of the game.
Next Up for SMU
Looking ahead, SMU will play at home next Saturday, November 2, against the Pitt Panthers. With their recent momentum and a solid record, the Mustangs will aim to continue their winning ways and extend their impressive streaks.
As SMU pushes toward their goals, fans will be eagerly watching to see how this team develops. The resilience displayed against Duke serves as a testament to their potential, and they are proving to be serious challengers in the FBS landscape.
