FRISCO, TEXAS — A late game fallout handed FC Dallas its first loss of the season, in their home opener to Chicacgo Fire FC.
Petar Musa almost scored first in the 13th minute. Musa, with his back to goal, chested a ball in from Lucho Acosta and placed it past Christopher Brady. However, his goal was called back due to offside.
FC Dallas would ultimately score first, in the 57th minute. Logan Farrington took a cross from Anderson Julio off his chest and pushed it through to get Dallas officially on the board.
But Chicago Fire answered—three times, in the final 17 minutes. Andrew Gutman scored on a Hugo Cuypers’ cross in the 82nd minute; in the 85th minute, Cuypers’ shot from outside the box setup Leonardo Barroso to score in his debut; and Cuypers, in stoppage time, ultimately found the back of the net on a penalty kick after being fouled by Sebastian Ibeagha.
Petar Musa had a chance to put FC Dallas back within one afterwards, but his penalty kick was stopped by a Brady diving kick save.
Recently acquired by Chicago from LAFC, Kellyn Perry-Acosta, a name who Dallas fans will recognize, left the match in the first half due to an injury. Anderson Andres Julio clipped the back of the former homegrown player who has played over 250 games in MLS over the last decade since signing his first pro contract with FC Dallas in 2012.
This was not Quill’s Toyota Stadium home opener—it was his second, although the scoreline this time was not as favorable as the one before. Back in 2019, he led North Texas SC, then newly-founded club, to a 3-2 win in their inaugural match.
While Dalles opened the season with 4 points after a win and draw on the road, they added none with this loss—they’ll look for more when they stay home to host the Vancouver Whitecaps FC next Saturday, March 15.
