SMU Introduces Adia Barnes as New Women’s Basketball Head Coach

DALLAS, TEXAS — SMU has officially hired Adia Barnes as the new head coach of its women’s basketball program, signaling a bold new era as the Mustangs transition into the Atlantic Coast Conference. Barnes arrives with an impressive résumé, having spent the past nine seasons leading the University of Arizona, where she guided the Wildcats to national prominence — highlighted by a trip to the NCAA Championship game in 2021.

During her tenure at Arizona, Barnes compiled a 169-114 record, five straight 20-win seasons, and multiple postseason appearances. Her ability to build and sustain a competitive program made her one of the most respected coaches in the game.

“I’m truly excited for the opportunity to be the next head coach at SMU,” Barnes said. “With the alignment, vision, and commitment on the Hilltop, I believe we can compete on the national stage and for ACC championships.”

Barnes replaces Toyelle Wilson, who led the Mustangs for four seasons. As SMU enters the ACC, the school is looking to elevate its presence in women’s basketball, and Barnes’ championship pedigree and recruiting experience are expected to make an immediate impact.
