5 Things to Know About the Colorado Avalanche Before the Stars-Avalanche First Round Series

1. Nathan MacKinnon Brings Experience

Nathan MacKinnon remains a postseason force. The 2022 Stanley Cup Champion earned a 23.9 net rating this season and wrapped up the 2024 regular season with 116 points — the second-highest total of his career. With 48 goals and 66 assists in playoff action and eight postseason appearances, MacKinnon brings veteran leadership and elite production.

2. Gabriel Landeskog’s Potential Return

Gabriel Landeskog could return to the Avalanche lineup after missing extended time due to a knee injury dating back to 2020. Following a cartilage transplant in 2023 and two recent games with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles, Landeskog has rejoined the Avalanche at practice. His return would provide a major emotional and on-ice boost in the playoffs.

3. Cale Makar’s Career Year

Cale Makar continues to elevate his game. The elite defenseman posted a career-high 92 points (30 goals, 62 assists) this season and ranked No. 9 in the NHL’s 2025 Skating Stats. His speed, skill, and offensive contributions from the back end make him one of the most dangerous players in this series.

4. Rantanen Reunion Adds Drama

Former Avalanche star Mikko Rantanen will face his old team in Round 1. After trades to Carolina and then Dallas, Rantanen signed an eight-year, $96 million extension with the Stars. He’s added 18 points (5 goals, 13 assists) since arriving, bringing his season totals to 32 goals and 56 assists. Expect emotions to run high in this reunion.

5. Goaltending Matchup Worth Watching

Colorado’s goaltending options could be a key storyline. Mackenzie Blackwood leads the crease with a 28-21-6 record and 2.55 GAA, but former Stars goalie Scott Wedgewood (14-6-2, 2.32 GAA) could also get the nod. Wedgewood appeared in three playoff games for Dallas in 2023 — a possible reunion worth watching.
